An Introduction to the Darbouka
This course is an invitation to step deeper into the world of rhythm with Muhammad Dominguez, exploring the creative side of drumming and the Darbuka’s unique place within traditional eastern percussion.
Our aim is to gently guide students toward the next level of skill and confidence, introducing techniques and ideas that open the door to improvisation, creativity, and fuller expression on the drum.
To get the most from this course, we recommend that students already feel comfortable with the basics of Darbuka playing — a solid beginner foundation is enough.
Course Includes
Ostentation: A Trap of the Nafs: Cultivating presence and sincerity on your drumming journey.
Advanced Articulations: Clear, step-by-step guidance on new sounds and techniques.
Introduction to Improvisation: Learning how to express yourself freely and confidently through rhythm.
Creative Phrasing: How to shape your playing in ways that feel musical and alive.
Polyrhythm & Polymeter: Exploring different rhythmic layers in an accessible way.
Rhythmic Modulations: Gently shifting between patterns with ease.
Split Finger (Turkish Triplets): A practical approach to playing smooth and fast triplets.
Rhythms: Including Turk Aksak, Devri Turan, Laz Havasi, Karsilamas, and Samay Thaqil.
Songs: Hijaz Mandira, Samay Bayati Qaddim, and Qasida Hadhrat Andalusiyya.
Please note:
Recordings of every session will be available to all registered students but we encourage you to attend live for maximum benefit.
The course is open to men and women aged 16+.
Course fee is non-refundable.
The course will be held online.
It is recommended to have your own Darbuka, but other hand drums are welcome.

A 4-week online session exploring the foundations of the most iconic drum of the near-eastern musical tradition under the guidance of Muhammad Dominguaz; one of the drummers of the acclaimed nasheed group "Al Firdaus Ensemble".
Course Includes
A review of the origin, evolution and journey of the Darbuka
Mizaan & lqa'at: Musical metric, rhythmical pattern, and their connection with divine revelation and the remembrance of the heart.
Aswaat: Essential sounds upon which rhythm is built up through the Darbuka
Basic exercises to develop finger dexterity, strength, and independence in its performance,
Rhythmical compendium
Explore a collection of common rhythms within the Mediterranean musical tradition
Songs: The Burda and Waslat Tabi li by Al Firdaus Ensemble

The course is open to MEN and WOMEN aged above 16 years old

This course will take place online.
It is encouraged that you have your own access to a Darbouka but other drums are welcome.
